The Institute of Medical Biology was established on the 1st April 2007 by A*STAR's Biomedical Research Council. Forming part of Singapore's biomedical continuum from basic research to improved applied healthcare and biotechnology for Singapore, the Institute of Medical Biology will be focussing its research on the critical interface between basic science and medicine. Its goal will be to increase understanding of the molecular basis of human diseases and to identify new therapeutic strategies for their amelioration, cure and eradication. Headed by Executive Director Professor Birgit Lane, the Institute will encourage the development of specialized know-how in the integration of molecular and cell processes into tissue structures. Research areas are expected to include human development and differentiation, stem cells, cancer, human genetic diseases, growth control from morphogenesis to wound healing, and cell and gene therapy. These areas will interface with other research activities within the A*STAR family of research institutes and with research conducted in Singapore's national universities, hospitals and clinical units. Expanding from its origin within the Centre for Molecular Medicine established by Dr Sydney Brenner in 2004, the new Institute of Medical Biology will also encompass the intramural research labs of the Singapore Stem Cell Consortium and provide the umbrella institutional structure for the Singapore Immunology Network. From November 2007 the Institute of Medical Biology will be based in brand new state-of-the-art laboratory facilities in the new Immunos/Neuros buildings on Singapore's exciting integrated biomedical research campus, Biopolis.
